Cheap Car Rentals – What You Need to Know

To make your experience as smooth as possible remember the following:

  • You must be at least 21 years old and have an Australian or international drivers license. A credit card will be required to secure a deposit for the time of your rental. If you’re 25 years old or younger a surcharge could apply – contact your chosen provider for more information.
  • Cars listed come with no limits on kilometres travelled unless otherwise stated. However, you cannot drive on unsealed roads or take the vehicle onto a ferry. Other restrictions may apply – make sure to check with the provider you choose for details.
  • During holiday periods, cars can booked out very quickly, especially high-demand vehicles like 8-seaters or family cars. If you’re after a low-cost rental make sure you book early to get the best price possible.
  • Cheap car hire is not just about getting a good daily rate, but also about avoiding unnecessary expenses. Check your car is filled up with fuel at pick-up and then to return it filled up also. If your vehicle is missing fuel at return you’ll get charged for it at a much higher rate than you would at a petrol station. Some rental companies offer an option where you can prepay for a full tank at a lower rate. This can be a good choice if you like the peace of mind, however if you’re keen on simply saving money on your trip usually you’ll be better off filling up yourself. Why? It’s tricky to return a car with an empty tank, and you won’t get reimbursed for fuel you haven’t used up.
  • Be aware that standard insurance policies include a fairly high excess which can be reduced with an additional fee or covered by your private insurance. Paying for insurance at the pick up desk can be expensive so it’s worth shopping around for an alternative before your trip to lower your overall costs.

Car Hire at Hobart Airport

Hobart Airport is located 17 km from the centre of Tasmania’s capital. The following firms offer a wide range of vehicles at the airport: Avis, Budget, Europcar, Autorent – Hertz, Redspot, Thrifty and Bargain Car Rentals. Their desks are located across the road from the central terminal. To avoid problems and get the best price, make sure you arrange a booking well in advance.

Many travellers to Hobart who are after cheap car hire ask if they should hire a car at the airport or rather at a depot elsewhere? Our recommendation for most visitors to Tasmania’s capital is to choose an airport pickup. Picking up your rental vehicle directly at the airport will save you the time and expenses of finding alternative transportation to another inner-city location. If you wish however to check rates at other locations you can use the search tool at the top of to find the cheapest car hire depots at other location around Hobart that would work for you. One way rentals from Launceston to Hobart are also possible.
