Cheap Car Rentals – What You Need to Know

To make your experience as smooth as possible remember the following:

  • You must be at least 21 years old and have an Australian or international drivers license. A credit card will be required to secure a deposit for the time of your rental. If you’re 25 years old or younger a surcharge could apply – contact your chosen provider for more information.

  • Cars listed come with no limits on kilometres travelled unless otherwise stated. However, you cannot drive on unsealed roads or take the vehicle onto a ferry. Other restrictions may apply – make sure to check with the provider you choose for details.

  • During holiday periods, cars can booked out very quickly, especially high-demand vehicles like 8-seaters or family cars. If you’re after a low-cost rental make sure you book early to get the best price possible.

  • Cheap car hire is not just about getting a good daily rate, but also about avoiding unnecessary expenses. Check your car is filled up with fuel at pick-up and then to return it filled up also. If your vehicle is missing fuel at return you’ll get charged for it at a much higher rate than you would at a petrol station. Some rental companies offer an option where you can prepay for a full tank at a lower rate. This can be a good choice if you like the peace of mind, however if you’re keen on simply saving money on your trip usually you’ll be better off filling up yourself. Why? It’s tricky to return a car with an empty tank, and you won’t get reimbursed for fuel you haven’t used up.

  • Be aware that standard insurance policies include a fairly high excess which can be reduced with an additional fee or covered by your private insurance. Paying for insurance at the pick up desk can be expensive so it’s worth shopping around for an alternative before your trip to lower your overall costs.

  • Travelling Around Tasmania

If your visiting the country and you haven’t driven in Tasmania or Australia before be aware that:

  • Many roads are narrow and winding, be careful.
  • In Australia (including Tasmania) you drive on the left side of the road.
  • Speed limits are enforced. Urban areas have a speed limit of 50 km/h and the maximum speed limit is 100 km/h unless otherwise signposted.
  • You must have a valid drivers licence with you while driving. If you have a drivers licence in a language other than English you must carry with you an English translation of it.
  • Using a mobile phone is prohibited while driving unless you have a hands free device. Wearing a seatbelt is required.

Many travellers to Hobart who are after cheap car hire ask if they should hire a car at the airport or rather at a depot elsewhere? Our recommendation for most visitors to Tasmania’s capital is to choose an airport pickup. Picking up your rental vehicle directly at the airport will save you the time and expenses of finding alternative transportation to another inner-city location.
