US Car Rental FAQ

Airport

Can I rent a car at the airport?

Yes, almost every major airport in the US will have a rental facility to choose from, although the company may vary. The major companies include Hertz, Alamo, and Avis. To find out which company services the airport you are travelling to, simply select the airport and then compare the prices and rates for each company at the given airport. You’ll need to do this ahead of time – do not wait to get to the airport, book as early as you can to make sure there’s a vehicle for you.

Insurance

Should I get insurance?

It is generally safer to get excess insurance, as this can save you from having to pay a very large excess fee in the event that anything is damaged. Depending on the company, it is possible to bundle car rental insurance with the travel insurance ahead of time, which could save you a bit of money if done beforehand. You can also opt to get car rental insurance from your own auto insurance provider if possible, as this can also be cheaper.

Minimum Age

How old do I need to be to rent a vehicle?

Generally speaking, the minimum age required to rent a car in the US is 25 years old, although some companies will allow you to rent a car if you are older than 21 years old. Although this will depend on the company, renting a car before you are 25 years old will result in higher insurance fees, and that will usually result in the driver getting charged a ‘young driver surcharge’. There may also be certain vehicles that are off-limits to young drivers. In no case can a driver under 21 rent a vehicle.
